And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger. (Luke 2:7)

Four times out of five my mother went through the agony of carrying babies full term only to lose them shortly after or before their births. After the loss of her second baby she sculpted this tender portrayal of Mary lovingly holding the baby Jesus while Joseph provides support and protection. Previously she had sculpted the nativity in the traditional format with the baby in the manger. With her recent loss fresh on her mind and longing to hold a baby of her own, she realized that Mary also would have wanted to hold her precious Son close to her. Thus was born this tender portrayal that many have come to cherish and enjoy over the years.
